1966 Triumph TR4-AIRS — A Rare British Classic, Show-Proven and Road-Ready
Few sports cars capture the spirit of the golden age of British motoring quite like the Triumph TR4-AIRS. Introduced in 1965 and produced through 1967 in Coventry, England, the TR4 represented Triumph's most refined iteration of its legendary TR sports car, distinguished by its landmark independent rear suspension (IRS), a semi-trailing arm system with coil springs that delivered a noticeably smoother, more composed ride than its predecessor. Under the bonnet sits the same long-stroke, high-torque 2,138cc inline four-cylinder wet-sleeve engine producing 104 bhp and 132 lb-ft of torque, a robust and characterful unit with the kind of mechanical soul modern cars cannot replicate.
The TR4-AIRS cemented its motorsport legacy in 1966 when three factory examples swept the podium at the Sebring 12-hour race, finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in class. With only about 28,000 produced across the model run, finding one in this condition is genuinely uncommon.
This particular example is a standout.
Finished in a stunning Navy Blue, this 1966 TR4-AIRS underwent a frame-off restoration completed in 2015 by its previous owner, the most thorough form of restoration possible, stripping the car to bare metal and rebuilding it from the ground up.
The current owner acquired the car that same year from Daniel Schmitt in St. Louis, Missouri, for $37,000, and over the following 11 years has invested more than $10,000 in additional improvements and maintenance, ensuring it not only looks the part, but performs with confidence.
In 2016, the car was shown at the Keels & Wheels Concours d'Elegance, one of Texas's most prestigious classic-car and vintage-boat shows, held at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. It has since appeared at numerous other shows, consistently drawing attention and admiration from fellow enthusiasts and the public alike.

The engine and drivetrain have received new hoses and rubber components throughout, a fully rebuilt and synchronized carburetor, a new gas filter (2026), and fresh fuel line heat protectors, all the details that separate a well-maintained classic from one that merely looks the part.
The fluids are current: engine oil, brake fluid, and clutch fluid were all replaced in 2025.
A new gasoline tank eliminates one of the most common concerns on cars of this vintage. Five new tires were fitted in October 2025, along with a new battery the same month.
